Tooth loss is still a common problem, where finding a viable replacement option is critical to dental and overall health. According to epidemiological studies, it is estimated that 40 million Americans are edentulous (i.e., they are missing all their teeth). Dental implants are an innovative way to replace missing teeth to restore teeth function and improve your life quality. They are especially recommended due to their stability, functionality, and durability.

           What is an implant-supported denture?

An implant-supported denture is a type of overdenture that uses dental implants as support. These implants are embedded directly into the bone, making the implant-supported denture more stable than a regular denture. At least two

           What are All-on-4 Implants?

The all-on-4 dental implants procedure is used to replace a complete set of natural teeth in the lower or upper jaw. Trough this procedure, patients have a permanent prosthesis that is attached to four dental implants. Each dental implant is strategically placed in the underlying bone. The dental implant looks similar to a screw and is often made of titanium or zirconium. It will act as a tooth root to fix the denture.

What are the benefits of All-on-4 Implants?

All-on-4 implants have several significant benefits for patients. This procedure not only helps patients to get a beautiful smile, but it also has a direct impact on their oral health. Here are some of the benefits:

           Increase self-confidence

One of the most significant benefits is the confidence and security that patients gain, who can smile again without worrying. Patients who receive all-on-4 dentures can enjoy a complete set of natural-looking teeth. It improves the patient facial aesthetic since the mouth will no longer look sunken in the absence of teeth. Also, all-on-4 dentures are strongly connected to the implants, increasing patient confidence when chewing and speaking. They do not move, unlike traditional dentures, and they are more comfortable for the patient.

           Prevent bone loss

Degradation of bone in the jaw is one of the most common effects of missing teeth. The jawbone naturally starts to recede or shrink as a consequence of the lack of stress caused by the act of chewing. All-on-4 replacement teeth will effectively minimize bone loss because the implants are fixed directly to the jaw and act like natural teeth roots. With an implant-supported denture, patients can chew normally, applying stress to the jaw. This action will encourage the retention of bone mass, keeping the jaw healthy and strong.

           Need easy care and maintenance

Unlike traditional dentures, all-on-4 dentures do not need to be removed and cleaned every night. For caring for all-on-4 teeth and implants, patients should follow good oral hygiene habits, the same as for natural teeth, brushing and flossing every day. Also, regular dental cleanings are still necessary to maintain the implants healthy and clean.

           Avoid bone grafting

Patients who are missing their teeth can experience bone loss. When the jaw becomes weak, bone grafting is used to rebuild it. Depending on the dental implant, bone grafting could be mandatory if patients have experienced extensive bone loss. Nevertheless, for an all-on-4 procedure, the implants are specially angled and positioned to take advantage of dense areas of the bone. Bone grafting is usually not needed even in patients with some level of bone loss. Another good option to avoid bone grafting is mini implants, which require less bone than traditional implants.

            They do not need fitting

Traditional dentures rest on the gums and apply pressure to the bone surface, accelerating bone loss. When bone density begins to diminish, the jaw starts to shrink, and the denture slips. Dentists will need to perform fitting sessions to adjust the denture to the new conditions. In the case of all-on-4 dentures, the pressure is applied to the bone structure instead bone surface. All-on-4 implants create a stable base and secure fit, eliminating looseness or slipping.

           Have a high lifespan

All-on-4 implants are a viable long-term solution and have a high success rate. A longitudinal study with ten years of follow-up, which included 245 patients with all-on-4 implants, showed a 94.7% success rate. Some dentists agree that all-on-4 implants can last at least 20 years and maybe a lifetime with proper care and good oral hygiene habits.

Dental implants cost is affordable compared to other tooth replacement options, especially considering their quality and long-term cost-effectiveness. According to The New York Times, a dental implant cost is estimated to be around $3,000 to $4,500. Their price will vary depending on the materials used and the location. Usually, front tooth implants cost is higher than back tooth. All-on-4 implants could be made of different materials, such as acrylic fused to titanium, monolithic zirconia, and porcelain stacked to a cobalt-chromium frame. In the United States, it would approximately cost an average of $12,000 to $25,000 per jaw. All-on-four cost is considerably lower than a complete set of traditional implants.

Both are effective solutions for people who have lost a complete set of teeth. It is believed that the location and placement of those two additional implants in an all-on-6 dental procedure provides a more stable base. Nevertheless, the

Implant-supported dentures are an excellent option if you have lost all your teeth. They look and act like natural teeth and can help you feel more confident about your smile. Nevertheless, to keep a healthy and attractive smile, you need to make sure you practice good dental hygiene every day and not skip your regular check-ups.

           What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a structure made of titanium or other biocompatible materials designed to match the shape and function of teeth roots. They are placed into the bone to support a dental prosthesis such as a crown, bridge, or denture. One implant can be used to replace a single missing tooth, or multiple implants can be used to hold a full denture. Two to four implants are usually used to support a lower denture, and four to six implants for an upper denture.

A dental implant has three components: the implant post, the abutment, and the prosthesis.

This process typically lasts between four to six months. Once the process is complete, the remaining parts of the dental implant are installed. The implant post is made of a biocompatible material that can integrate with the bony tissue thanks to a biological process called osseointegration. The material widely used for this purpose is titanium.

There are several types of implant abutments; their shape varies according to the implant system used. The abutments used for a denture are very different from the ones used for crowns or bridges.

             - is one or more artificial teeth that can replace missing teeth aesthetically and functionally. Depending on the number of teeth, it could be a crown, bridge or denture. A dental crown is used to replace a single tooth, a dental bridge to replace several teeth in a row, and an implant-supported denture to replace an entire jaw of teeth.

           What is an implant-supported denture?

An implant-supported denture is a set of artificial teeth that are held in place by dental implants. They are used to replace missing teeth when all upper or lower teeth have been lost. It is a viable alternative when patients have enough bone to support the implants.

In the past, people have been using traditional dentures to replace missing teeth, but they can be uncomfortable and even problematic. Nowadays, implant-supported dentures are an alternative, which eliminates problems associated with shifting or moving. They are much more stable and durable than traditional dentures.

           Types of implant-supported dentures

The denture has special attachments inside its base, which are connected to the abutment of the implant. According to the way the attachments are installed, there are two types of implant-supported dentures: bar-retained and ball-retained.

Bar-retained dentures: A thin metal bar is designed according to the jaw's shape and attached to the implants' abutment. Clips or other attachments are then installed onto the bar and denture to hold the denture in place.

Ball-retained dentures: A series of ball and socket joints are used to keep the denture in place. The dentist will install a socket in each implant and balls in the denture. Each pair will be aligned to create a stable connection.

           Caring for your implant-supported denture

With proper care and maintenance, implant-supported dentures can last for many years or even a lifetime.

Careful cleaning is vital for both natural teeth, traditional dentures, and implant-supported dentures. Although dental implants will never get a cavity, they still need maintenance to keep them in the best possible condition. Without proper dental hygiene, the bone supporting the implant can get infected. This condition is known as periimplantitis.

           Brushing the abutments

The abutments and the gums around them can be brushed using non-abrasive toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. This type of toothbrush can prevent marks on the surface of the abutments. This process might be a bit more complicated if the denture is not detachable. Avoid brushing too vigorously because it may lead to irritated or damaged gums.

           Flossing

With fixed implant-supported dentures, flossing becomes more crucial than ever. People with implants are also vulnerable to gum disease caused by the accumulation of plaque around the implants. Luckily, there are special flossers designed for implants. You can complement flossing with oral irrigators. An oral irrigator is a device specially designed to access and clean difficult areas, such as the areas underneath a fixed denture.

           Mouthwash

Antibacterial mouthwash will provide additional care. Look for sensitive cleaning products; otherwise, products that are too abrasive can cause extreme discomfort. Also, avoid products with intense flavours because they can leave an uncomfortable feeling in your mouth.

           Denture cleaning solution

If the denture structure is detachable, you can remove it from your mouth and clean it thoroughly. Brush your dentures at least once daily using a denture cleaning solution and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Clean all denture surfaces removing bacteria and food particles.

           Overnight cleaning

It is not recommended to sleep with dentures in your mouth. So, take your denture out at night and use the opportunity to clean it using water and a special soluble tablet to clean dental prostheses.

, your dentist will establish regular appointments to ensure its proper operation. Your dentist will be able to perform a deeper cleaning. They will clean the gum-implant interface and every surface of the denture. They will also examine the condition of your gums and mouth tissues to be sure they are healthy.

The dentist will review if your denture is fitting comfortably. If your implant-supported denture is ill-fitting, it can begin to irritate your gums or other mouth tissues. So, during a dental appointment, your dentist can make the adjustments that you need.

The examination might include an x-ray evaluation or advanced imaging. In this way, your dentist can check if the abutments are placed correctly and if the dental implant is adequately attached to the bone.

Losing teeth is a stressful and alarming experience, where finding a reliable dentist who can help you restore your smile is key. There are many dentists and oral healthcare professionals in New York, so choosing one is not an easy task. Beyond looking for a specialist in cosmetic and restorative dentistry, there are many aspects you should value to ensure the success of the dental treatment. If you are looking for the best cosmetic dentist, you should consider these eight tips.

           1. Look for a dentist who is a specialist

If you are dealing with a particular disease or condition, you want to ensure that the clinician you choose has advanced training according to your needs. In this way, you can achieve the best results for your oral health. In the United States, nine specialties are recognized by the American Dental Association; one is prosthodontics, which deals with replacing missing teeth using implants or prostheses, such as crowns, bridges, and dentures. Always choose professionals who have the proper training because this is a fundamental pillar to obtain an effective, long-lasting, and safe treatment.

            2. Verify that they work with high-quality material and technology

A dental clinic equipped with the latest technologies is also essential. A better result can be obtained when your dentist has appropriate, modern, and efficient technology. At Kipnis Dental Implant Clinic in Brooklyn, we have the latest in intraoral scanning technology and facial scanning to bring down cosmetic treatment cost and patient waiting times significantly. Our patients can often get their complete restorations completed in much less time than other dental clinics in Brooklyn. It is necessary that the staff is organized and trained on how to use technologies, both for diagnosis and for carrying out treatment. Nowadays, new techniques allow the dentist to perform less invasive treatments and minimize patient discomfort. It is necessary to choose a team of dentists that continually invests in renewing their working tools like we do at Kipnis Dental.

We also understand that it is equally as important to ensure the quality of the materials we use. Our materials meet the highest standards and are from recognized brands that are well supported by the scientific community. The materials quality is critical in many treatments, such as

for example. In this case, proper materials are essential to achieve implant function, implant durability, and implant-related health problems, mainly infections.

           3. Make sure that the dentist is willing to be invested in your treatment

Ensure that the dentist has consultation hours compatible with yours and can schedule appointments in case of emergencies. There could be many times when you need help, and delay treatment could interfere with your oral health. Also, see if the dentist is willing and open to all the concerns you might have regarding prevention, treatment, and future care. Dentists and professionals of the clinic should dedicate the necessary time to each patient to guarantee the treatment's success. Look for a clinic where they are willing to improve your health no matter how much time and effort it takes. At Kipnis Dental we make our patients our priority.

           4. Consider patients reviews

One of the best ways to find a high-quality dentist is by asking. You can start talking with your family, neighbors or friends to find a dentist who has worked well on their cases. You can ask if they feel comfortable and satisfied with the experience and ask about the process to schedule an appointment, waiting times, office environment, and office staff service. Furthermore, if you do not have references from someone you know, it is an excellent option to visit the dental center's website or look for patient’s Google reviews and testimonials. Make sure you do your due diligence when collecting this critical information.

           5. Check if the facilities make you feel safe and comfortable

Good dentists are aware of two things: (1) performing the best dental treatments and (2) assuring patients' comfort. In the latter, the facilities must be clean and attractive to ensure that you do not have a bad experience visiting your dentist. Facilities that bring you confidence and comfort are essential to give you the safety you need. The general cleanliness of the clinic is a good indicator that you are in good hands. Dental clinics are encouraged to perform a general cleaning daily. A dental clinic must have strict disinfection protocols since the patient's health depends on it. Sterilization of all the material used after each patient is mandatory.

           6. Consider the clinic's location

Although it is not essential that your dentist is close to your home, you must consider the clinic's location. Remember that regular appointments are necessary for maintaining proper oral health, that some treatments require several or multiple visits, and that there is the possibility that you have to visit your dentist for an emergency. If your dentist's office is located close to your home or work, it would be easier to schedule dental visits saving a lot of money and time.

Usually, dentists that work with high-quality products and cutting-edge technology charge a higher price than dentists who work with lower-quality materials and have less technology. But it is not a rule. It is better when you can clearly identify what the cost-benefit ratio is. Before choosing an option, ask in detail about the cost of the treatment and any additional services. It would be best to evaluate different factors instead of whether the dentist is cheap or expensive. Kipnis Dental is always working to offer balanced treatment options.

Use technology to your advantage before attending to a dentist. Visit the clinic or dentist's website, where you can evaluate many factors to choose the best option. Check what their mission is, examine the content they expose, see photographs of the facilities, check who makes up their team of professionals, and testimonials from other patients.

When dealing with your dental health and maintaining your smile, feeling safe and being in good hands is essential. Developing a trust-based relationship with your dentist is a fundamental part of the treatment. Do not rush choosing where to go. Take your time to assess your options which are plenty in Brooklyn. Making sure you and your dentist are in sync is key for the treatment's success. Because when it comes to advocating for your own well-being, you are the person who should be in charge.

Millions of people in the United States and around the globe get dental crowns to protect, cover and restore teeth that are otherwise impossible to restore.

A dental crown requires the preparation of the damaged tooth to act as a support and is able to restore its natural shape and function. Since the tooth is not visible, some patients mistakenly believe that it is protected against decay. But the truth is that the underlying tooth and root structures are still

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap made from different high strength materials; the most common are metal, porcelain, resin, and ceramic. Dentists typically recommend crown placement when there has been extensive damage to the tooth structure above the gum line, but the root remains healthy. The tooth structures underneath the crown can still get damaged by bacteria that cause tooth decay. Bacteria usually leak through the space between the crown and the gum line, known as the margin. If plaque - a sticky biofilm of cariogenic bacteria - builds up at the margin and is not removed, a cavity will eventually appear underneath the crown.

In contrast with crowns, implants are used when the patient has a total loss of their tooth, including its root. Under these conditions, the whole tooth will be replaced by an implant made of a biocompatible material unaffected by caries. This is the case because there is no natural tooth that can decay. That being said, dental implants are still susceptible to a type of infection called peri-implantitis caused by poor dental hygiene. Peri-implantitis affects the supporting tissue around the implant and can lead to implant failure down the road. It is very important to take good care of your dental implants! At Kipnis

How to detect cavities under crowns?

When decay develops under the dental crown, it usually progresses rapidly, undermining the remaining tooth. Therefore, it is essential to identify a cavity as soon as possible. Some signs and symptoms that may indicate the need for an early dental check-up are:

            Pain during mastication

Tooth sensitivity to cold or sweet food

            Inflamed gums

            Bleeding when brushing

Visible brown or grey spots at the margin

Usually, the infected area is small, which makes it difficult to detect the defect. Dentists can use a radiograph (x-rays), CariVu, and other advanced dental imaging techniques to determine if there is a cavity forming underneath the crown without taking it out.

How to prevent cavities under dental crowns?

The most effective way to avoid having cavities, including cavities under a dental crown, is proper dental hygiene routines. For this reason, you must brush your teeth at least twice a day, paying particular attention to clean the edges of the crown. Also, dental flossing or the use of an oral irrigator is practically mandatory to keep the prostheses in good condition.

Practicing good oral hygiene can prevent bacterial plaque accumulation and bacteria seeping into the space between the crown and the gum. Respecting all the check-ups scheduled by your dentist is essential to keep your crowns in perfect condition.

How to treat cavities under dental crowns?

Quick treatment of the cavity is essential to stop its progress. With no treatment, caries can lead to tooth loss and other severe consequences. There are several ways to treat cavities under a dental crown.

             Repair the margin:

If dental decay is recognized at an early stage, the dentist might be able to clean the decayed material and do a simple dental restoration. This dental filling, placed at the dental crown's margin, could be enough to restore your oral health.

             Root canal:

If dental decay has progressed to affect the dental pulp (nerve), an endodontic treatment (root canal) might be necessary. During a root canal, endodontists remove the pulp that contains the nerve endings that cause pain.

            Crown lengthening:

Dental crown lengthening is a procedure to recontour gum tissue, bone, or both in order to expose more of the tooth surface. This procedure is often required when caries advance below the gum.

            Crown replacement

: In many cases, dental crowns should be removed to treat and eliminate the carious tissue located underneath. After caries are entirely cleaned up, the old crown can not be used because it is impossible to match the original's tooth shape. A new crown must be made, ensuring a perfect fit. Placing a new crown is possible only when the remaining tooth structure can still support it.

            Tooth extraction:

For more severe cases, where cavities have left untreated, decay will continue going deeper until it reaches the pulp. In this scenario, dentists will evaluate if a root canal therapy is possible; otherwise, tooth extraction will be necessary. Tooth extraction is the best option when the tooth decay is beyond repair, and the surrounding gum and bone density is weak.

           To conclude

might look like it is covering and protecting the entire tooth, there is a small area at the crown's base where the tooth that supports the crown is still exposed to the oral cavity. For these reasons, it is important to keep in mind that maintaining proper oral hygiene (i.e., regular dental brushing and flossing) is vital for the treatment's longevity. If you believe your crown is at risk, please schedule a consultation with Dr. Kipnis to see how to treat your tooth and prevent further damage!

A major advancement in dentistry has been the introduction of the dental implant—an artificial device used to replace missing teeth. Development of dental implant technology has resulted in improved comfort and better appearance for patients. Dentists also recommend dental implants over the traditional methods of rehabilitation due to its superior success rates.

The two major types of dental implants are:

            Subperiosteal:

Subperiosteal type includes a metal framework with metal posts, secured on or above the jawbone but underneath the gum (metal posts projecting above the gum). This type is uncommon and is mainly used in patients with insufficient or unhealthy bone. The procedure to place a subperiosteal implant is time-consuming and has a low success rate.

            Endosteal or Endosseous implants:

Endosseous implants are the most commonly used screw-shaped implants. These implants mimic the shape of a natural root of a tooth and are surgically inserted into the jaw bone (both upper and lower) at the site of missing tooth or teeth. Endosseous implants are allowed to heal and attach to the surrounding bone before the placement of the crown. The formation of a connection between the implant and jaw bone, post-implant insertion, is called osseointegration. A good osseointegration allows the implant to withstand heavy chewing forces. The osseointegrated implants are then rehabilitated with prosthetic appliances.

Prosthetic options for replacement of missing teeth with dental implants are:

            Single crown or Implant-supported bridge:

A single crown is fabricated on a single implant and inserted to restore a missing tooth in either jaw. The implant-supported bridge includes a set of joint crowns screwed directly into implants. For example, if 3 consecutive teeth are missing, then all 3 teeth are restored either using 3 implants with 3 crowns (splinted or non-splinted) or with 2 implants placed on terminal missing teeth supporting 3-unit crowns. The prosthesis comprises only white teeth, with no pink gums or underlying metal for additional support. They are mainly preferred in young patients with normal gum line or older patients with no display of gums while smiling or talking.

             Denture implants:

These are used to rehabilitate patients with complete edentulism (full mouth missing teeth). Edentulism is a debilitating condition that can have an impact on patients’ nutrition, aesthetics, social life, and may instill a low self-esteem. The use of conventional dentures has reported a significant level of dissatisfaction among denture wearers due to ill-fitting of dentures, frequent mouth sores, and failure to eat a variety of food. Research suggests that implant-supported prosthesis is an effective treatment option for edentulous patients as the use of implants preserves the existing bone and provides better retention, stability, and esthetics compared to conventional dentures. These are mainly of two types: Overdentures and Hybrid dentures.

            Overdentures:

Overdentures are removable denture prostheses, considered better alternatives to conventional dentures. Overdentures are made out of acrylic and supported by dental implants. These acrylic dentures fit over implants with the help of bar and clips. Overdentures can be removed for cleaning. A minimum of two-implant overdenture in lower jaw and four well-spaced implants in upper jaw are recommended for stable implant-supported overdenture in healthy bone.

Patients with overdenture have higher satisfaction due to enhanced appearance, better chewing efficiency, and lower bone loss compared to conventional dentures. However, it may take up to 6 months to complete the procedure and regular removal of denture may hinder its stability.

Hybrid dentures are more reliable and stable alternatives to conventional dentures. These implant-supported prostheses are of fixed type and can only be removed by the dentist during appointments. The word “Hybrid” refers to the combination of different materials used to fabricate the different parts of the prosthesis.
Materials such as Titanium or Pekkton are used to fabricate underlying support bars, composite resins or porcelain are used for pink gums, and acrylic, zirconia (cubic or monolithic, zirconia layered), or Lithium disilicate (Emax) are used for teeth. Overall, hybrid dentures have higher stability, are less bulky, and more aesthetically attractive than overdentures. However, food impaction, speech problems, and inability to remove and clean on a daily basis are some of the drawbacks.

Until few years, titanium material was considered the material of choice for the construction of the bar. However, recently metal-free prostheses, especially zirconia, is gaining popularity in bar construction. This is due to the following properties:

Low plaque accumulation and ability to maintain good hygiene due to the presence of smooth surface

Zirconia bars are manufactured using high precision CAD-CAM (Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing) technology. It has been observed that patients prefer zirconia bars. But the high cost and rigidity (cannot be adjusted in the mouth) of the zirconia bars over titanium bars are an area of concern.

There are several implant systems available in the market. Here are some of the features to choose from while choosing an implant system.

            Material:

Commercially pure titanium and titanium alloys are the most commonly preferred materials for dental implants procedures. Lately, bio-active ceramics (zirconia) have also been introduced in the market. Zirconia implants offer better aesthetics and are soft tissue friendly as they cause less plaque accumulation. However, due to different material properties, zirconia is expensive and used only for single tooth and bridge replacement.

            Shape:

The shape of the implant is either tapered or parallel. Tapered implants should be preferred as they instill better implant stability.

            Surface design:

The implant surface is represented as threaded or non-threaded. The threaded type should be preferred over the non-threaded, as they improve the implant stability and help dissipate the stress better. V-shaped, square-shaped, and reverse buttress are thread designs present on threaded implants. Of all, square thread design offers more bone-implant contact.

            Surface texture:

Implant surface texture can be rough or smooth. A rough-surfaced implant provides a better connection between the implant and the surrounding bone.

            Implant length:

Implant length varies from 7-18mm. The length of the implant to be used is decided based on the available vertical bone height. Longer the implant, the better are the surface contact and implant stability.

Deciding on the right implant isn’t always easy. Although dental pain is a normal reaction to some stimuli, it needs to be taken seriously when it is intense and acute.

Severe dental pain is a sure sign that something is wrong, and that professional help is required. Most of the time, this severe and acute dental pain is caused by an infectious process that needs to be resolved to protect the patient's oral and systemic health.

           What is a tooth infection?

A tooth infection is a collection of pus resulting from a bacterial infection of the dental pulp, the periodontal ligament, or the supporting bone. In some cases, the infected material stops affecting only these oral structures and can spread to other regions of the body like the face, neck, and even the heart. For example, if the infection spreads to the parapharyngeal space, a space behind your throat, it can be a life-threatening situation.

           What causes a tooth infection?

In general, a tooth infection results from other oral complications that have not been solved in time, such as dental caries and periodontal diseases. These infections can also occur due to complications after dental or facial trauma, especially when bony tissue is exposed to the environment.

Dental caries: Tooth decay is one of the leading causes of tooth infection. It starts affecting tooth enamel and dentine, causing cavities. If it is not treated in time, it gets deeper until reaching the pulp (internal soft tissue of teeth). Once the infection comes into contact with the pulp, an abscess begins to form because it does not have adequate mechanisms to fight the disease and because antibiotic treatment is not sufficient either.

Periodontal disease: In its early stage, periodontal disease is called gingivitis. Here the gums become inflamed as a result of a bacterial infection. Untreated gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more severe condition where the tooth's supporting tissue can deteriorate. When this supporting tissue, the periodontal ligament, deteriorates, small pus collections start to form between the dental roots and the supporting bone.

Injured tooth: A cracked, or broken tooth could have the dental pulp exposed, allowing bacteria to attack this sensitive tissue and causing an infectious process, an abscess, similar to the case of dental caries.

How to know if I have an infected tooth?

Severe and persistent pain is the main symptom of a tooth infection. This pain usually radiates to the mandible (jawbone), neck, or ear. Other symptoms might include:

An unpleasant taste in your mouth, bitter taste.

Tooth sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures.

            Difficulty chewing or biting.

            Swelling of the face.

Swollen lymph nodes in your jaw or neck.

            Fever and general fatigue

In more critical cases, the infection can cause severe inflammation of the upper digestive tract and airways, preventing normal swallowing and breathing.

           Tooth Infection Treatment Options

The treatment will depend on the origin of the infection and the seriousness of your condition. Once a diagnosis has been made, the objective will be to control the disease as soon as possible to avoid more problems.

Drainage: Your dentist will make a small cut into the abscess and drain the pus. Occasionally, a small rubber drain could be placed to keep the area open for a few days until complete drainage.

Root Canal Treatment: When pulp causes severe pain due to infection, a root canal treatment will be necessary. This option avoids teeth extraction and eliminates the origin of the pain. During a root canal treatment, the pulp is removed, and the root canal is cleaned before being filled with a biocompatible material to prevent another infection.

Antibiotics: They are useful to clear up the remaining infection or stop its spreading. Your dentist may recommend them as a complementary treatment because antibiotics, in the case of tooth infection, do not eliminate the cause. It is important to start antibiotic treatment only under the supervision of your dentist. Self-medication is becoming a serious public health issue that is, according to the World Health Organization, causing increased health costs, duration of illness, and economic burden on families and societies across the globe.

Tooth extractions: In complex clinical scenarios, there is no effective dental treatment to resolve the infection while maintaining the tooth's integrity. In these cases, tooth extraction is necessary to resolve the infectious process and prevent future complications.

Complications for an untreated tooth infection

Without treatment, the bacterial infection progresses. Therefore, it can begin spreading to the jaw, neck, parapharyngeal space, heart, and even to the brain. Some possible complications that can arise as a result of not treating a tooth infection are:

Tooth loss - most dental infections, if non-treated, will lead to tooth loss.

Bone infection - affects the bone surrounding the tooth.

Maintaining good oral hygiene is the most effective way to avoid tooth decay, gingivitis, and periodontitis. Remember to brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride enriched toothpaste replacing your toothbrush every four months. Floss your teeth regularly and keep regular checkups with your dentist for more in-depth and professional cleanings. Visiting the dentist regularly also allows controlling dental caries, periodontal disease, or broken teeth. At Kipnis Dental Clinic in Brooklyn NY, we see a lot of emergency patients for

Finding the right information regarding your oral health can be hard. This article offers several tips to help you understand the best dental care practices so you can take charge of your mouth!

Be sure to check around for an affordable dental professional. You can consider a dentistry institution in case you are uninsured. Do not neglect the care of your teeth, and visit your dentist at least two times a year.

Look around for different dentists if you are anxious and want to find one that makes you comfortable. Search online for reviews and see if the person is known to excel at working with patients. Then you will go to your appointment feeling a lot more comfortable.

If you are under a prescription medication, you might experience bad breath and dry mouth as side effects. You may not realize it, but if your medication affects the amount of saliva you produce, it will damage your teeth and gums. Talk to your doctor to see whether or not your medication is causing your dry mouth. If so, it may be possible to switch medications. If you can't, a dentist can help you with cotton mouth.

Hydrogen peroxide has been known to help when you wish to whiten your teeth. Hydrogen peroxide is safe to use topically for your teeth, and you just need to pour a little over your toothbrush to use it. Take measures to ensure that you keep away from your gums while brushing. After you are done brushing with the hydrogen peroxide, go ahead and brush with your regular toothpaste.

Don't overlook your interior teeth when scrubbing them. It's easy to only stick with the teeth that you're capable of seeing in a mirror, however your teeth will start to decay if they don't get any attention paid to them. To prevent these problems, be sure to brush the teeth at the back of your mouth thoroughly.

Don't chew ice. As you chew chunks of ice, your teeth may crack. This allows plaque and bacteria to settle in these crevices, which will lead to more cavities. Be cautious when eating popcorn, nuts or any other food that is difficult to chew. If you suspect a cracked tooth, go to the dentist immediately.

Do not hesitate to use large quantities of floss to clean your teeth. Approximately 20 inches should suffice to clean your whole mouth. Stabilize the floss by twisting it around both of your middle fingers. When you are done, about 2.5 centimeters of floss should remain to clean your first tooth.

Do not keep your children from chewing their toothbrushes. Chewing on the brush can help to clean the teeth in-between regular brushing. Also, kids chew on them to get familiar with them. They will like the brush more if they are allowed to familiarize themselves with it.

Take in a lot of dairy products if you would like preserve healthy teeth. Milk, yogurt and cheese are all crucial. Consider taking a dietary supplement loaded with calcium should you suffer from lactose intolerance. Your teeth will become noticeably whiter and you will definitely have significantly less tooth decay should you introduce more calcium into your diet.

Don't smoke! Smoking stains your teeth and will cause tartar and plaque to accumulate on them as well. Cigarettes can also boost the chances of getting oral cancer and gum disease. Quitting is the best way to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Make biannual visits to your dentist. While it may appear obvious, regular dentists visits can help you with better dental health. They will notice small issues and fix them before things get worse, which can save lots of money, time and pain.

Most mouthwashes do an excellent job of freshening your breath, but these products are often highly unpalatable. Mix salt, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide together in boiling hot water. This mixture will give you the perfect rinse for your mouth.

Don't brush right after consuming citrus or any foods with lemon. Acidic foods soften your tooth enamel. If you brush immediately after eating citrus fruit, you'll damage your enamel. Swishing with mouthwash and popping in a piece of sugar-free gum is a much healthier alternative for your teeth.

If you feel discomfort because of your wisdom teeth, speak with your dentist about extraction. Having teeth pulled doesn't result in too many complications, and wisdom teeth are not necessary for normal food consumption. If your wisdom tooth has caused an infection, however, it should be taken out to guarantee that the infection will not get out of control.

Show children good dental practices from an early age. The sooner you start good dental practices, the better teeth they will have for their whole lives. This can cause lower bills from your dentist and a healthier child overall.

You may have gingivitis if you have red or inflamed gums. If you do not have a good dental hygiene, you might be developing a case of gingivitis. Bleeding gums can also be a sign of gingivitis. If you believe that you may have gingivitis, see a dentist immediately.

Consume plenty of calcium for healthy teeth. Your teeth will stay stronger when you consume foods that contain calcium. Take a calcium supplement if you do not like these foods or are lactose intolerant.

If your teeth are problematic, be sure to choose a dentist who specializes in your particular dental conditions. They can offer you great advice or refer you to another dentist that is a specialist. If you don't want to be referred, find one that specializes in the issue you need resolved.

It is a myth that placing an aspirin by a sore tooth will ease the pain. People think the pain will go away if they put an aspirin pill by their tooth. It can actually cause the tooth to decay more quickly because the aspirin could burn it.

It is not that easy to find a dentist whom you like and trust. Nonetheless, if you invest some time in finding out about the many options and variations available in dental care, you will surely find and excellent long-term dental care provider. Finding the

           What is endodontic retreatment?

Endo-dontics is the term used in dentistry to describe clinical work done inside the tooth (i.e., endo = inside; dontic = tooth). Teeth are made of a hard 'shell' but internally contain a highly specialized soft tissue called the dental pulp. The core of the dental pulp is located in a chamber in the center of the tooth's crown, and extensions of this soft tissue connect it with major blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatics through small canals located in the tooth's roots. Root canal is the common term used to describe the clinical removal of the pulp, and its projections into the dental roots. This is done when the pulp is no longer alive or causes severe pain due to infection.

When the pulp gets infected, it reacts with an immune response similar to any soft tissue in our body. This immune response causes inflammation in an attempt to fight the infection. Unfortunately, the dental pulp is located in a solid chamber that can not expand to allow tissue expansion. Therefore, the inflammatory response ends up causing severe pain and blood-flow loss. In short, the pulp has no means to fight infection, as other tissues do, and needs to be removed to reduce pain and restore the patient's oral health. Once the pulp chamber and the roots are clean, the dentist uses a series of tools to make the root canals a little wider to allow their sealing with a biocompatible material. Root canal treatment is often used as a last resort to avoid teeth extraction.

Unfortunately, not every root canal treatment is successful and, in some cases, fails, causing pain or discomfort to the patient. Root canal retreatment can be described as the process by which a dentist accesses the tooth's internal structure to remove an already treated pulp chamber and root canal system.

Who performs a root canal retreatment?

           When is retreatment needed?

The following are the most common reasons for recommending root canal retreatment:

When proper disinfection protocols have been violated - the main objective of root canal treatment is to eliminate infected content from the root system; if appropriate disinfection protocols, including the use of absolute isolation, are not followed, the likeliness of that being the cause of post-treatment pain is high.

When there is a missed canal - teeth, especially morals and premolars, often have multiple roots and multiple root canal systems. In some cases, roots themselves have numerous root canals. If the dentist is able to identify untreated canals, this is an excellent reason to try retreatment.

Coronal leakage - coronal leakage refers to the presence of bacteria or pathogens inside the tooth chamber of an endodontically treated tooth. When this happens, bacteria have access to the material filling the root canals, and, with time, this can compromise the integrity of the entire tooth. Since it is difficult to know to what extend the endodontic treatment has been compromised in these cases, it is wise to choose endodontic retreatment as a viable option.

If apicoectomy can not be performed - apicoectomy refers to an alternative treatment that, similar to endodontic retreatment, can be used to save a tooth from being extracted. In this case, the affected root is accessed surgically, and only its tip and any infected tissue around it are removed. The remaining root is disinfected internally and sealed. In some cases, this alternative treatment might be the best clinical choice for the patient. Unfortunately, not all cases are compatible with an apicoectomy, which leaves retreatment as the only teeth-saving choice.

The micro bacterial population causing endodontic issues after an original treatment is significantly different. Studies have shown that post-endodontic treatment infections are often characterized by pathogens that are never the cause of the original disease. In many cases, these alien bacteria are introduced into the teeth canal system during treatment and are often a consequence of improper use of dental isolation techniques. Dentists need to always follow proper root disinfection protocols (i.e., sodium hypochlorite and ultrasonic vibration) and adequate isolation techniques during any endodontic procedure, especially during retreatment.

Why get a dental implant, and what are their associated costs?

In 1945, the United States started using public water systems to distribute small amounts of fluoride to reduce the incidence of dental caries. This initiative has been recognized as one of the most successful public oral health programs around the globe. Communities that have access to small amounts of fluoride in their water present 25% less incidence of dental caries. Less incidence of dental caries in a population translates into teeth staying healthy and functional for a longer time. This is particularly important for children, who are the most susceptible population because it allows them and their parents to fight dental caries in a more step-by-step manner. Prevention of rampant and aggressive caries during childhood and adolescence has been linked to reduced loss of permanent teeth during adulthood.

In the past, dentistry tried to alleviate the dental caries problem using a “surgical” approach. This approach, which waited for cavities to occur, concentrated in the removal of the caries lesion and its further restoration to recover function. Dealing with the result of the disease instead of its cause proved to be unsuccessful. Nowadays, dentistry uses an improved “medical” paradigm. Modern dentistry recognizes the need to characterize patients’ risks and use that information to design a patient-specific evidence-based treatment plan.

Effective, public and private, models for caries management have resulted in young populations with reduced tooth loss. The incidence of tooth loss in the US has been declining by a 10% every decade, and therefore the focus on restorative dentistry has shifted towards the treatment of partially edentulous (i.e., with missing teeth) patients.

Treatment options for partially edentulous patients

Patients who do not require the replacement of many teeth are categorized as partially edentulous. Treatment options for these patients are mainly three; (1) removable dentures; (2) fixed partial dentures (i.e., bridges); and (3) dental implants.

Removable dentures are usually used as a temporal solution and are often only chosen due to socioeconomic reasons. These dentures do not integrate well with the underlying dental anatomy leading to a lack of stability when compared to fixed dentures and dental implants. Consequently, patients have to change their dietary habits to adapt to the reduced functionality of their mastication. These patients might also feel self-conscious of their removable dentures which can significantly affect their social life. Moreover, removable dentures require regular and rigorous cleaning.

Fixed prosthetics (i.e., dental bridges) do integrate more effectively with the patient’s dental anatomy and provide improved function when compared to removable options. Unfortunately, they require to be anchored to adjacent, in many cases unaffected, teeth. During this procedure, the supporting teeth (also called abutments) suffer irreversible tissue loss, which in the future can compromise their integrity. For instance, studies have found that around 20% of failed bridges lead to dental caries in their anchoring teeth. Furthermore, fixed prosthetics are not a life-long treatment, and in some instances require additional more invasive preparation of the abutments (i.e., root canal treatment).

For these reasons, dental implants, are perhaps the most cost-effective treatment for partially edentulous patients. Dental implants have the same stability as dental bridges and do not compromise the structure of adjacent teeth. These implants, which are anchored to the bone underlying the dental defect, take advantage of a biological process called osseointegration. Osseointegration occurs when the bone healing process promotes the deposition of new and healthy bone directly on top of the surface of a biocompatible material. In restorative dentistry, this means that there is a strong functional, structural, and biological link between the supporting bone and the dental implant.

           Clinical limitations of dental implants

Patients might not be eligible to receive a dental implant in the following scenarios:

           · Allergies or lack of biocompatibility with the material of the dental implant.

           · Lack of volume or quality of the underlying bone.

           · Aesthetic concerns due to gum recession or lack of integration with soft tissue (i.e., gums).

           · Patient’s history of bad dental hygiene.

           Cost-benefit analysis

Responsible clinicians will always adapt treatment plans to match their patients’ socioeconomic context – in both private practice and governmental programs. Dental implants are not cheap, and patients need to be aware of any associated costs when choosing them as a treatment option. Especially because most dental insurance plans consider dental implants as “experimental” and “aesthetic” procedures, and do not cover their costs. The following are some of the key aspects to consider.

The number of missing teeth and number of implants needed – The cost of an individual implant varies across the US from USD 3,500 to 5,000. This includes the surgical procedure, the implant, and the crown that replaces the missing teeth. But usually does not include other additional treatments – described below. Patients need to understand and be aware of cases where the successful restoration of their dental health requires more than one implant. Treatment plans including multiple implants should have a reduced price per unit.

           · Additional treatments – Dentists can propose additional treatments to improve underlying bone volume or quality, improve implant integration with soft tissue (i.e., gums), and improve aesthetic outcomes. As previously mentioned, implants require a minimum “amount” of healthy underlying bone to be a feasible treatment option. Bone grafts are the additional treatment of choice in these cases. Alternatively, the dentist could recommend more specialized implant designs to overcome bone-health-related limitations – zygomatic implants for instance. The costs associated with these additional treatments range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars.

            · Treatment longevity – an important aspect to consider when choosing dental implants as a treatment option has to do with their longevity.

           Dental implants

when successful are considered a life-long treatment. This means that if the osseointegration process is successful and the patient maintains proper oral hygiene, dental implants can potentially last a lifetime. In contrast, fixed dentures, and other dental treatments, need to be replaced as their materials deteriorate with time. The ADA (American Dental Association) recommends replacing dental bridges every 5 to 7 years – bridges could last as long as 10 years if patients take good care of them.

           · Oral health risks – Aside from the tangible costs of dental implants as a treatment, patients should consider the potential risks of not taking action to solve their oral health problems. Not restoring a missing tooth, not only decreases the patient’s quality of life but, if untreated, can lead to complex clinical scenarios that are more expensive to treat. Additionally, sometimes patients decide to keep infected teeth in their mouth worried about the costs associated with treatment. This approach is very negative because dental caries and periodontal disease are contagious infections that are transmitted not only from one patient to another but from one tooth to another too. Finally, infected teeth can contribute to the development of severe systemic illnesses like cardiovascular disease, dementia, infertility, pregnancy complications, rheumatoid arthritis, and others.

           Final remarks

Ideally, tooth loss in modern society should not happen. Patients, dentists, and governmental agencies should all work together to improve preventive strategies instead of focusing on ineffective treatments. When teeth loss happens, dental implants are the most cost-effective treatment option for patients – if they are medically eligible. Dental implants are still expensive and most of the burden of their cost is still carried by the general public. Governmental agencies should support dental implants' clinical value and incentivize insurance companies to stop considering them as experimental or aesthetic procedures. Perhaps this could be as historically effective in promoting public oral health as fluoridation of public water systems has been in the past.

Breaking down the costs of All on Four Dental Implants

First off which implant solution do you want? Below we list 3 options patients can consider for the type of All on 4 implant solution they would like.

           Standard Acrylic or Composite All-on-4

The standard acrylic denture implant consists of 4 implants and an acrylic denture. While there are a few components, the cost of this procedure usually ranges between $20,000-30,000. With though expensive, is still the most affordable solution in implant dentistry. Why so expensive? If you factor in bone removal, tooth extraction, setting the implants, and providing temporary dentures - in addition to the final denture, which is a titanium bar and nano-composite teeth - the cost adds up. The only drawback, is the composite all on four is not as natural looking and may not last as long.

           All-on-4 One Piece Porcelain

This is the most aesthetic solution and a bit pricier. Composed of either a CrCO, titanium, or zirconia base and porcelain overlay, the cost of this process is typically more due to higher costs of the materials involved. It includes all the cost mentioned above and not only have better aesthetics but increased longevity as well. Although longevity is an important factor, when breaks do occur they are more expensive to fix. If the patient opts for the zirconia bar and it breaks, the cost of fixing it can be over $15,000.

           All-on-4 Individual Porcelain Teeth

This is the high end. It bascially consists of a metal frame with individual porcelain crowns topping the implant abutments. As mentioned, this racks up the highest cost of any full arch dental implant solution - factoring in all the associated costs. The primary benefit to this approach is that if something breaks in the future, the cost of fixing it is significantly cheaper and faster due to the ability of the dentist to remove individual porcelain crowns. The only drawback is the initial cost.

If you're interested in individual costs, here are some tips.

Dental implant expense for the individual tooth, by June 2020, is approximately $1,850. The cost includes procedures like custom made abutment, which directly anchoring screws the dentistry implant in position, oral implant limit that cements atop the abutment to heal the mouth bone fragments, and the dental care implant crown. For charges that go over $1,850 for one dental care implant location, bone grafting, gum gentle tissues treatment, or removal might be required to mend the condition of the gum line as well as the jaw bone fragments.

Custom made oral implants are uniquely designed to ensure that no two individual implants are related. The treatment process could be comparable, but since the implants are special, the quantity of adhere to-up appointments, processes, and expense of dental implants modify in line with the treatment website and the condition of dentition. These dental care implants are designed for your gums and teeth, as opposed to other tooth replacement options.

After going through an intensive evaluation, you will know that the cost of dental care implants measures up favorably for some other teeth substitute possibilities. As dental care implants give a long term answer to your dental health without actually pressing your teeth, they definitely seem like the smartest choice. But these seemingly best choices often don’t account for the continuing costs accrued after the initial reduce upfront expense. You will need to maintain having to pay repeatedly alongside experiencing the processes. Dental implants would definitely be better than such treatments. When it comes to home oral health care, many individuals see flossing as an optional extension to brushing. However, it should not be the case.

Flossing is a significant oral care habit. It cleans and unsticks food stuck between your teeth, which decreases the number of bacteria and plaque in your mouth. Alongside brushing and bi-annual dental specialist visits— it is fundamental to oral health to avoid cavity build-up that ruins your teeth in the process.

While flossing is an addition to brushing – both cleaning methods are integral – it isn't truly discretionary. In contrast, most dental specialists would suggest that you floss every day in addition to brushing twice a day. See some of the advantages that you can get below.

A huge number of microscopic organisms and different germs can be found in your oral cavity. Regardless of how well you take care of your teeth, there is consistently that threat of microbes and microorganisms getting caught in the middle of your teeth, especially if you don't care about your eating routine and practicing proper oral care like brushing and flossing.

            Forestalls Tartar Build-Up

It doesn't take long for plaque to collect on your teeth. At the point when plaque is left unremoved, it can solidify into tartar. Flossing daily will assist in eliminating plaque from between your teeth and forestall tartar formation at the gum line.

           Conclusion

To wrap things up, if you want healthy gums and teeth, flossing in addition to brushing your teeth daily is a necessity and not an option. Smile confidently. Brush, floss your teeth daily, and don't forget to visit your dentist at least twice a year or when needed.

           Coffee in the Morning

We all need coffee in the morning. After hitting the snooze button three time (on the weekends) the first thing I go for a cup of morning joe. As necessary as that cup is - one should be very conscious of the consequences of that daily grind.

Studies have shown that habitual coffee drinking often means having to invest your time and money in teeth whitening later - due to the unmistaken staining properties of the humble coffee bean. That's to say nothing of what your teeth suffer from it's acidic properties.

So to drink or not to drink?

As one Brazilian study has shown, the polyphenols present in coffee are actually responsible for combatting dental plaque due to its antibacterial effect.

            And that's not all!

While your resting metabolic heart rate may increase by 3-11%, a daily coffee habit may reduce the risk of Type II diabetes, Alzheimer's Disease, heart disease, dementia, various cancers, and stroke.

As we all know, the human is a holistic organism and one negative can effect a positive somewhere in the body. The relationship between periodontitis and these comorbidities is starting to brew new theories on the benefits of coffee.

The biggest finding by the American Cancer Society found that people drinking four or more cups of coffee per day were surprisingly 49% less likely to die from oral cancer than non-coffee drinkers.

And coffee is not alone in it's cost / benefit analysis. Tooth discoloration can be caused also by ingesting tea, wine, and nicotine. And that's where dentists (Me) come in. Teeth whitening can help with most of the types of darkening and discoloration produced from inhaling these compounds - and reaping all the rewards (cancer free, strokeless, memory intact, sweet tooths).

            So drink away!
